BCE Unity Garden

Fourth Grade and Life Skills Students Join Forces to Create a Beautiful Garden and Courtyard at Barton Creek Elementary!
WHAT IS THE UNITY GARDEN?

This semester at Barton Creek fourth graders and Life Skills students will have an opportunity to work together to create, explore and learn - all while designing a garden in the courtyard!  Each student will build and maintain a vegetable, herb and flower garden through the use of technology, hands-on learning and creative thinking.

The Use of Google Glass

Students wanted to use technology to witness "random acts of kindness;" with Google Glass, the students are able to bring their service-learning work outside the classroom walls. Through the use of Google Glass we have been working to figure out the most creative and innovative ways to share our learnings through Glass. As of now, we are creating videos and voice journals and submitting it to Evernote and Tumblr to share with others.

One penny can save a life.

One spark will light up the dark.

One building can start a town.

One caterpillar blooms into a butterfly!

One strum makes a song.

The Power of Inclusion and Service-Learning

BCE fourth graders are inspiring and teaching the community about differences and challenges among all children. The students are understanding the meaning of inclusion and how segregation can be harmful to a person's self-esteem.  Recently, the class read aloud and discussed the book Out of My Mind by Sharon Draper (http://sharondraper.com/bookdetail.asp?id=35). The book is about an eleven-year-old with a photographic memory and quite possibly, the smartest kid in school.  If only she could speak up, if only she could tell people what she thinks and knows, but she can't. She can't talk. She can't walk. She can't write.  Students had insightful conversations and a-ha moments regarding the book and I believe it fostered a positive, non-judgemental community within our classroom.

I think that the Unity Garden is a fun way of learning. I think that it's outstanding how we can help others, have fun, and learn all at the same time. I think it's an awesome opportunity to get out and do something. We can also experience what were learning And not just imagine, see, the plants growing.

It has changed my life by seeing our friends [peers with disabilities] learn how to plant things and how they can learn something new from the garden it also helps our friends socialize and make new friends when we are in the garden.
